Configuration Options

The NRG Goalpost Boom mounts a pair of either WindSensor P2546-OPR or Thies First Class Anemometers on the NRG 80m XHD TallTower. Mounting one of both sensors is also an option. Anemometer cups are positioned at exactly 80 m above ground level, 2.5 m away from each other and 1.99 m above the horizontal arm of the boom. This configuration complies with guidelines provided in Annex G of the IEC 61400-12-1:2005 standard when installed on NRG 80m XHD TallTower, a solution that is well suited for performing power performance tests at operating wind farms.

NRG tubular tilt-up towers allow companies to perform both internal and contractual power performance testing in a way that does not require the installation of a permanent met tower. No permanent foundations or long-term permitting is needed. These towers reduce the overall cost of the test, allow for short lead times (typically less than a week), and come in an efficient and portable single package, offering more logistical flexibility for wind farm developers and operators working in remote locations.

A standard NRG 80 m measurement system would typically mount sensors at 80 m heights on side mount booms such as the Mounting Boom | 2.4m (95"), Tubular. This goalpost boom has a larger vertical offset than any NRG side mount boom, and therefore must be mounted lower on the tower to mount sensors at the same 80 m elevation above ground. A short 8-inch diameter tower tube section is included with each goalpost boom that should replace the topmost section of your 80m XHD TallTower, shortening the overall height of the tower and eliminating tower induced flow effects that would otherwise be present at the 80 m sensor height.

There are three different Goalpost Boom kits:

  • 10749 includes the Goalpost Boom, mounting stems for two (2) Thies First Class Anemometers, and a short 8-inch diameter tower tube section.
  • 10750 includes the Goalpost Boom, mounting stems for two (2) WindSensor P2546-OPR Anemometers, and a short 8-inch diameter tower tube section.
  • 11706 includes the Goalpost Boom, a mounting stem for one (1) Thies First Class Anemometer, a mounting stem for one (1) WindSensor P2546-OPR Anemometer, and a short 8-inch diameter tower tube section.
