EarthLink Email Problems - SMTP Server Permanently Shut Down

Beginning October 2007, EarthLink shut down their long standing SMTP server (smtp.earthlink.net). EarthLink will only support authenticated SMTP moving forward (using the server smtpauth.earthlink.net). EarthLink reports that advance notices were sent to all account holders regarding this change, and the server will NOT be reactivated.

This change prevents any iPack (or other device) from sending mail through the old server. When forcing a data call on an iPack, you might see the internet error code 083. It is important to remember that although the email link is broken, Symphonie will still be recording and storing data onto the MMC card.

Unfortunately, to resume calls the iPack must be programmed with a new SMTP server on your next site visit.

If you have stopped receiving emails because of this problem, patch files will not work. However, if you are still receiving emails from any sites using the smtp.earthlink.net server and you have an iPack revision 014 or higher (NNN-NNN-014), you have a very brief window of opportunity to send patch files (see Symphonie manual beginning page 95) with updated settings.

To enter a server which requires SMTP authentication into your iPack, you will have to change the following settings (found on the Mail Access tab in SDR):

• SMTP Server Name
• My SMTP Server requires authentication = Yes
• SMTP Login
• SMTP Password

Typically, your SMTP login and SMTP password are the same as your ISP dial-up login settings (User Name, User Password on the ISP Access tab in SDR), but check with your ISP to be sure. The instructions for iPack programming are contained in the Symphonie manual beginning on page 31.
