In my conversations with several wind farm operators, I have noticed a great deal of interest in turbine condition monitoring systems (CMS)—products that detect mechanical issues early. The main driver seems to be the large bills associated with unexpected gearbox and generator repairs. I have heard stories of crane mobilization costs alone eclipsing $150,000 for some wind farms. The hope is that CMS systems will reduce the cost of unscheduled maintenance events.
