David Blittersdorf elected president of American Wind Energy Association
Burlington, VT - David Blittersdorf, president/CEO of NRG Systems, Inc. of Hinesburg, Vermont, was elected president of the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) at the association's annual conference in Washington D.C. June 3 - 7.

Blittersdorf has worked in the wind energy industry for more than 20 years and has been an active AWEA member since 1985. He served previously as AWEA president-elect and treasurer and has been involved with several AWEA committees over the years, including its legislative, standards, siting and small turbine manufacturers committees.

As the wind industry's national trade organization, AWEA represents wind power plant developers, wind turbine manufacturers, utilities, consultants, insurers, financiers, researchers, and others involved in the wind industry. The association has nearly 1,000 members and provides them with up-to-date information on: policy developments related to wind and other renewable energy sources; wind energy projects operating worldwide; renewable energy projects in various stages of development; companies working in the wind energy field; and technology developments. AWEA has advocated for the development of wind energy as a reliable, environmentally superior energy source in the United States and around the world since 1974.

"Wind energy continues to be the world's fastest growing energy source. Wind and other clean energy sources can play an important role in providing our nation with a secure energy future," said Blittersdorf. "It's an exciting time for our industry. I'm proud to be working with such an outstanding organization to further the development of renewable energy."

For the past two years, worldwide installations of wind energy generating capacity have outstripped those of nuclear energy. According to AWEA, the wind industry is expected to grow in 2001 by 60% in the U.S. and 34% worldwide. Wind turbines and wind farms generate electricity without emitting pollutants or carbon dioxide, the leading gas associated with global warming. Wind energy was recently singled out by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a technology of choice to bring fresh power online without contributing to global warming.

In addition to his involvement with AWEA, Blittersdorf is founding member and past chair of Renewable Energy Vermont (REV). REV is a non-profit association that works to strengthen renewable energy policies in Vermont and promote greater use of clean energy sources like wind, solar, hydro and biomass.

Blittersdorf's company, NRG Systems, is a leading manufacturer of wind measuring equipment for the global wind energy industry.
