Lattice tower, need more than 6 anemometers
Situation : A Brazilian customer wanted an assessment system with more than 6 sensors for an existing 100 meter lattice radio tower. Solution: We helped the customer configure a system with 2 Symphonie data loggers, each with 6 channels, for a combined capacity of 12 sensors. We put half the sensors on one logger and half on the other logger. Using different site IDs for each logger (such as North and South), and satellite iPacks which continually check in with an international time server, the customer was assured of matching time/date stamps in the merged data stream. NRG Symphonie data loggers and sensors can be mounted on nearly any existing tower, and we offer many cable lengths for taller installations.
Small, constrained site area
Situation: A customer in Colorado has one of those rocky ridge line sites that can be most promising, but he wasn’t sure if enough guy wire space was available for the 164-foot radius standard for a 60m tower. Solution: Using local airport data records, the customer was able to determine that the Colorado site was not generally prone to severe icing events (icing events exceeding 1/8” clear ice). We recommended the 60mXHD TallTower configuration requiring only 110 feet guy radius. For regions prone to severe icing, we recommend using a 50m XHD TallTower to decrease the tower’s overall surface area and increase its survivability.
Remote site, no cellular service
Situation: A consultancy customer working in Mongolia for a Beijing client who wants frequent data contacted us for help. The site was remote, hard to reach, with no residents and no cellular service. Solution: The Symphonie data logger was paired up with a satellite iPack to send data once a week or as frequently as once a day. Using Iridium satellite communication services, the satellite iPack can send your data to you from practically anywhere in the world.
Significant icing
Situation: A customer in Canada’s Northwest Territories reported their site had intermittent but significant icing days, more than 20% a year, which lowered their site data acquisition rate well-below the 90% minimum required by their investors. Solution: Power was available at the site, so a set of heated IceFree sensors could be used. IceFree sensors are heated to keep ice from forming, so they capture data during icing events. For off-grid locations, customer-provided power can be supplied by battery-solar, battery-small wind, or both.
